How to use the quote function at OOTF
« on: July 23, 2010, 12:57:44 AM »
To insert a quote:

There are 3 ways to insert a quote into your post:

1. Insert the codes [quote] and [/quote] around the text that you want to appear as a quote.

So if you type this:

[quote] this is a quote [/quote]

You will see this

Quote
this is a quote

2. While reading someone eles's post, hit the (http://outofthefog.net/images/Quote%20Icon.JPG) link at the top right hand side of the post. This will open a reply window and automatically insert a copy of the post you are reading inside the [quote] and [/quote] codes.

3. While typing a post, you can hit the (http://outofthefog.net/forum/Themes/OOTF_SMF_Theme/images/bbc/quote.gif) button above the edit window. This will insert the  [quote] and [/quote] codes at the position of your cursor. Anything you type between those codes will appear in the quote.

"Nested" Quotes - Quotes inside Quotes

You can nest quotes - i.e. put quotes inside quotes. So if you type this:

[quote] this is a quote [quote] this is a quote inside a quote [quote] this is a quote inside a quote inside a quote[/quote][/quote][/quote]

you will see this:

Quote
this is a quote
Quote
this is a quote inside a quote
Quote
this is a quote inside a quote inside a quote

Including the name of the person being quoted:

if you type "=name" inside the square brackets after the word quote, that name will appear in the title bar above the quote.  So if you type this:

[quote=eclipse]Oh dear, still not figured out how to quote here![/quote]

You will see this:
Quote from: eclipse
Oh dear, still not figured out how to quote here!

Quoting is a little tricky at first but if you try it a couple of times you soon you will be an expert. There are 3 ways to insert a quote...

1. While reading a post hit the "quote" button at the bottom right of the post - this will quote their entire post at the top of your reply. You will have to delete by hand  those parts of their post that you don't want to include in the quote.
2. Skip past the "Fast Reply" box at the bottom and press the "Full Reply Screen" button - this will take you to a reply screen that has more features - including a "Quote" button. the quote button just inserts the BBCode
Quote
and
around any piece of highlighted text in your reply.
3. You can type the BBCode yourself using the keyboard - so:

Quote
this is a quote

will appear as

Quote
this is a quote

Also, if you type =name inside the square brackets after the word quote, that name will appear in the title bar.  For example:

Quote from: Haggis
Oh dear, still not figured out how to quote here!

will show up as:
Quote from: Haggis
Oh dear, still not figured out how to quote here!

There are more options for formatting posts in the "Full Reply" screen than there are in the "Fast Reply" box that you see at the bottom of each thread, including a "Preview" button that lets you see what your post will look like and give you the chance to change it before it goes live.

Ok any one like me, just position your courser right at the end after the last quote word.  Then press enter and shift to get underneath (fresh sentence) add what you want to say and hit post or save.

But now how do people get more than one quote appearing in a post?  As in more than one blue box?
